Willy Kinderman is an aspiring playwright who drives a taxicab to pay the bills. His girlfriend Angie Montalbano is a recovered addict who uses her passion for acting to overcome her urges. Angie enjoys using Willy’s writing for material in her acting classes. The two have a happy life together until a mysterious visitor comes calling. A. Richard Cutter used to be, “The most important American playwright since Tennessee Williams,” according to some critics. Now, he is responding to an eight year old fan letter Willy once wrote. Cutter is financially dried up and is set on using Willy not only for a free place to stay, but to collaborate and to teach Willy what is means to be a true playwright. Eventually, Cutter’s scheming takes a toll on the couple. Angie’s acting studio wants to produce Willy’s play, but Willy has become too focused on pleasing Cutter that he has no desire to see a low budget performance of his work. As emotions begin to escalate, Willy is forced to decide whether or not he has enough talent on his own to succeed or if he needs to live under the wing of Cutter for the rest of his career.see less
